Every five-hundred years, a ritual must be performed. From the dawn of recorded history, and the reign of the God Philosopher, a Holy Seal has been maintained in the center of Heaven’s Gate. After the passing of the Purple Eclipse, Philosophers and Inkforgers have been chosen among this generations youth. In order to maintain the seal, the Great Philosopher and Penwoman must be pruned from the mass of eligible youth. Speeches, debates, contests, and combat are all needed and vital in order to prove who is able to ascend and complete the apotheosis.
